When it comes to scenic beauty, it's hard to beat Banff National Park in Western Canada's Alberta Province.
Canada's oldest national park, established in 1885, is just made for superlatives: gloriously green forests, the majestic Canadian Rockies, pristine lakes and glacial-blue rivers. It is one of seven parks that make up the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks that are on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Most visitors come to see the breathtaking beauty of Lake Louise, one of the most photographed places in the park, if not in Canada itself. A luxurious resort anchors one end of the lake and is a stark contrast to the wilderness setting across the lake.
The park is just made for the outdoorsmen, with a myriad of activities such as hiking, biking, boating, ice diving and snowshoeing, depending on the season you visit this year-round destination.
Those who prefer less strenuous activities can grab some binoculars and go bird watching. The best time to see some of the more than 260 bird species in the park is from just before sunrise to about 10 a.m. The best places to find these feathered friends are in the wetlands of the lower Bow Valley.
The park is also famous for viewing wildlife such as moose, bear, wolves, big horn sheep and elk as well as smaller animals such as beavers and weasels. Visitors are cautioned to keep their distance from animals they spot on the highways or while hiking on the trails, as wild animals can be dangerous.
Visitors to the park, which is located about 110 miles west of Calgary, have a wide range of accommodations, from camping to luxury resorts, to choose from. The main city is Banff where restaurants serve a variety of international cuisines.
