About Banff

Banff National Park was Canada's first national park and located 1 1/2 hrs west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The name "Banff" is derived from Banffshire, Scotland, the birthplace of two of the original directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway. From Banff's humble beginnings as a 26 square kilometre hot springs reserve, Banff National Park now consists of 6,641 square kilometres of unparalleled mountain scenery nestled in the heart of the beautiful Canadian Rockies. Banff National Park is home to the following seven National historic sites: Skoki Lodge, Abbot Pass Hut, Howse Pass, Cave and Basin, Banff Park Museum, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, and the Cosmic Ray Station on Sanson Peak.

Each year, millions of visitors go to Banff to gaze at the emerald waters of Lake Louise, walk amongst the flower-filled fields at Sunshine Meadows, and drive beneath the towering jagged peaks lining the Icefields Parkway. Snow-capped peaks, glistening glaciers and sweeping vistas are just one part of what makes Banff National Park so special.

You can enjoy all the comforts of home in the town of Banff and the village of Lake Louise, or step out into the wilderness and the home of some of North America's wildest creatures, including grizzly bears, caribou and wolves.Banff National Park is managed by Parks Canada, a division of the federal department of Canadian Heritage. A permit is required for all visitors to Banff National Park and is available at the park entry gates and visitor centres.
